Item Writing Committee
The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) announces the formation of a new Item Writing Committee. Item Writing Committee members will write new items for the ABOM item bank of examination questions. Item Writing Committee members will be provided with annual item writing training in coordination with the ABOM board directors’ training at the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) facility in Philadelphia.
The ABOM welcomes Drs. Sarah Armstrong, Sayeed Ikramuddin, Shanu Kothari, Scott Kahan, Richard Lindquist, Jennifer Seger, and Sean Wharton to the inaugural Item Writing Committee.
The next NBME Item Writing Workshop is scheduled for April 14, 2014. Objectives of the NBME seminar include refining item-writing techniques and enhancing the quality of items in examinations and programs. The agenda includes a review of item-writing guidelines; examples of “good” and “bad” test items; a dynamic item-writing session; and the opportunity to interact with participants from a range of health professions.
To maintain absolute confidentiality and separation between the examination writers and all preparatory or review courses for this examination, ABOM committee members are not allowed to teach, lecture, provide seminars, assist, make comment or in any way participate in such courses while serving the Board and for a period of 3 calendar years following the end of service.
